Human remains have been found inside a large crocodile just hours after a man was snatched from his boat by one of the dangerous reptiles.
Australian police told how DNA samples had been taken to see if the remains found inside the 15ft 5ins saltwater crocodile matched the missing 62-year-old, who was attacked on Saturday afternoon.
Northern Territory police told how the man, who remains unidentified, was on his boat with his wife, son and daughter-in-law when the reptile plunged him into murky waters.
It is believed the holidaymaker was emptying a bucket over the side of his boat, at a popular billabong near a tourist spot when he was attacked.
Searches for the victim covering over a one-mile-radius began on Saturday afternoon resulting in the shooting of two crocodiles in the Kakadu National Park, south east of Darwin.
Today Sergeant Andrew Hocking said human remains were discovered inside a 4.7metre-long crocodile, which was located about 1.5 kilometres from the attack.
He said: “The remains have been taken for examination. There are a number of statements to be taken from witnesses and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
Sergeant Hocking said the area had recently reopened following the conclusion of the wet season.
He added: “The difficulty with the search in this location is getting in large boats.
“We’re only able to bring in small boats, but using the expertise of the Territory Parks and Wildlife staff, they managed to help us bring it to a conclusion.
“Thankfully this was carried out and the victim recovered very, very quickly. Searches can be quite difficult and take a number of days sometimes before any resolution.”
This is the second deadly crocodile attack this year. In January a 12-year-old boy was killed and his friend mauled by a crocodile as they swam in a water hole in the park.
Crocodile numbers have swelled across Australia’s tropical north since the species was protected by federal law in 1971.
The crocodile population is densest in the Northern Territory, where Kakadu is located.
