NAKHON SI THAMMARAT — Two homemade pipe bombs exploded at a house in Ron Phibun district on Saturday, killing the 50-year-old house owner.
Police, security officers and bomb disposal officers rushed to the scene after being alerted about two bomb blasts there, Pol Lt Col Natthawut Chansamut, a duty officer at the Ron Phibun police station, said on Saturday.
Officers found a man, identified later as Kamthon Sutthidet, lying dead near the back door of the house. A bag containing 16 home made pipe bombs was found next to his badly damaged body.
Bomb disposal officers detonated the pipe bombs, made from PVC and iron pipes stuffed with gunpowder and caped at both ends.
Authorities were investigating further as they feared the pipe bombs might have been related to security cases.
A police investigation found that Mr Kamthon had been shot and seriously wounded in an earlier gun attack. He appeared to be under stress and rarely associated with others, neighbours said.
Police said one theory was that the man might have made the pipe bombs to take revenge on those who had attacked him.
However, the officers have not ruled out other possible security-related causes.
