The Voice Cambodia Star San Sreylai Shot Dead in Murder-Suicide
A former finalist on The Voice Cambodia was fatally shot this afternoon at a beauty clinic in an upscale neighbourhood of Phnom Penh by a man believed to be her estranged husband.
San Sreylai, a finalist on Season 2 of the popular singing competition, was shot in the entryway of the Vita Longa Clinic, a spa and health centre on Street 360 near Boeung Keng Kang market.
A police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed Sreylai, 23, was the victim and identified the shooter as her estranged husband, Chey Rin, 53, a customs official.
Meas Rithy, deputy director general of Hang Meas, her record label and employer, also identified the shooter as Rin.
“As of this time, we are still waiting for relatives to come to the clinic to decide where her body is to be sent,” Rithy said.
A friend who was outside the crime scene and who identified himself only by his first name, Dara, said Sreylai was a friendly person but often complained about Rin.
“The husband did not want Sreylai to enter singing competitions,” Dara said. “And since she became a part of The Voice, the husband kept quarreling with her. Even though they already divorced, he still kept bothering her.”
